Coach David DiPiazza, known for leading multiple high school soccer teams to state championships, is new to Vestavia Hills High School this year as both an 11th-grade U.S. History teacher and the head soccer coach. A former student at John Carroll Catholic High School, he was drawn to Vestavia because of the unlocked potential he sees in both the players and the program.
As a coach, DiPiazza is not only demanding and detail-oriented, but also deeply committed to building culture and character—not just winning games. He believes that a player’s character should come first, explaining that “character is not just a light you can turn on and off.” His coaching philosophy focuses on honing players’ core values, teaching them to work hard, stay dedicated, and develop skills they can carry into the future. Through soccer, he aims to help his athletes grow into better men—college students, husbands, employees, and fathers.
His vision for the program is clear: to “get to the Final Four, compete at a championship level every year, and build a lasting culture the school and community can be proud of.”
Though he’s only been at Vestavia for a short time, DiPiazza has already made a significant impact. Students describe him as “intense but encouraging, thorough, very clear about what he wants, always going the extra mile, and motivational.” He came in with high expectations from day one. On just the second day of practice, DiPiazza sent the athletes on a “long run”—without telling them how far they’d be going. It turned out to be a 5.5-mile challenge, setting the tone for the season and preparing players for the level of discipline needed for success this spring.
In just a few weeks, he’s already built a foundation of trust and mutual respect with his athletes, believing in them, and earning their belief in return. Players say one of the most motivating things he does is speak with confidence, using phrases like “we will” when referring to championships. This mindset, they say, is refreshing and empowering, helping them build confidence and buy into his vision.
He also works hard to build team unity and culture, showing understanding and grace when students make mistakes—but ensuring accountability through team consequences, emphasizing that growth comes from responsibility and shared effort.
Beyond the field, DiPiazza brings that same energy into the classroom. As a history teacher, he holds his students to high standards while focusing on building relationships and mutual trust. He hopes his students leave his classroom able to connect the past to the present, learning from history’s lessons to create a better future. He also encourages them to stay dedicated to their goals, reminding them that “Kobe Bryant took hundreds of free throws in his free time.”
Ultimately, Coach DiPiazza hopes that every student who comes through his program leaves not only as a stronger athlete, but as a better person—because, as he puts it, “if you’re a good person in life, you’ll be a good player on the field.”
Like pizza, he uses various toppings to craft his team into a masterpiece. He’s not just here to win. He’s here to build a culture, shape leaders, and leave a lasting legacy at Vestavia Hills High School.
