This past weekend, a select few from our track and field team visited the Alabama 4-H Center for a leadership retreat. This group consisted of every grade level found at the main campus (sophomore to senior), as well as every event group in both genders, except for distance due to their upcoming Sectionals meet.
At 9 am Saturday, the team met up at the dorms to begin the quick one-day retreat. The coaches communicated their expectations, excitement, and important information for the weekend ahead. Earlier in the week, a schedule consisting of group development sessions, competitions, and recreational activities was sent out along with the organized teams used for the competition. The teams, intentionally picked and sorted by the coaches, served as a way for the leadership group to connect beyond their sphere in the world of track and field.
As the retreat went along, the lines between event groups faded, and distant friends became a family. The ultimate goal of the weekend was to enhance the team culture that was so prominent last year. Through the development sessions, discussions of how to perceive success challenged the athletes to shift their perspective towards the sport. To focus on the progress over the outcomes and ways to be a more impactful leader were also considered. These sessions served as times for the athletes to think thoroughly about the season ahead as Coach Anderson and the assistant coaches directed the team to consider another perspective. It also served as a time for those to challenge themselves in sharing with the group after discussing with their assigned teams for the weekend. The track and field team, with the coaching and guidance provided, is set up to have another successful season.
As the short one-day retreat filled with devotionals, laughter, and growth came to a finish, the athletes thought carefully about what they would bring back with them to the full track and field team. While the competition and free time were full of keepsake memories, the time spent in discussion was beyond impactful. As the indoor season creeps near, the team is ready for the long seasons to come and is ready for anything that might come. And with the mentorship of the coaches, the team of leaders is ready to set the example and mindset for the team. Be sure to keep an eye out for the track and field team as their first meet on December 6th approaches quickly!
