Winter break is just around the corner, but before we get our long-awaited period of fun and relaxation, we have to get through the dreaded first-semester exams.
Exams start in under a month, and unless you want to end up pulling an all-nighter the night before to cram, you should probably begin studying now. There are several useful study resources online: Quizlet for flashcards and quizzes, Knowt for practice tests (including free response questions), Khan Academy for videos that explain the basics, and so much more. As for nondigital studying, it's always a good idea to go over your notes, going as in-depth as highlighting and rewording or as cursory as skimming the highlights and making flashcards. You should also utilize the resources provided to you by your teacher, be it study guides, links to helpful websites, slideshows, or any other study material they’ve given out this semester. It can also be helpful to find a group to study with, allowing you guys to quiz each other, fill in the blanks in each other's notes, and help each other understand important topics. As hard as it is, try to minimize distractions when you're studying. This can be most easily done by putting your phone on do not disturb, or, more effectively, in another room. The Library in the Forest is an amazing distraction-free study location for those who don't want to study in the confines of their home. It has several small, sectioned-off study cubicles, as well as private study rooms you can reserve for larger group studies. After all the time you spend studying, taking the actual exams should be no worry.
Exams begin on Monday, December 15th, with first and second period exams on Monday, third and fourth period exams on Tuesday, fifth and sixth period exams on Wednesday, seventh and eighth period exams on Thursday, and makeup exams on Friday. Most classes will have an exam, but some might not have any, while others will have projects that count as the exam. Your teacher should provide you with the details on whether or not you are testing. Also, unless you want to stay at the school after your testing is over, make sure you submit your VHHS First Semester Exam Early Checkout Form by 8:00 am on the first day of testing. Remember to get a good night’s sleep before the exams, eat a good breakfast, and bring all the materials you will need for your testing (Chromebook, charger, sharpened pencils, etc). As important as the exams are, it’s also important not to get too stressed out about them. Good luck to everyone, and have an amazing winter break!
