The media below contains the opinion of an individual student and therefore does not represent or speak to the values of Vestavia Hills High School and Vestavia Hills City Schools.

You’ve definitely seen posters in the lunchroom or heard announcements telling you to vote for SGA officers. Hopefully you did your civic duty and actually voted. Maybe you were among those taping up posters, campaigning on social media, and entering the realm of civic service. But what actually results from the elections?

Many students wanted to be involved in SGA. According to the sponsors Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Blocker, 66 students ran to be SGA representatives, 24 students ran to be an executive officer(which was a 50% increase from last year), and 33 students ran to be a class officer. The elections results are in and new officers will be inducted during Awards Day on Tuesday, 4/28.

Being on SGA is less about the title and more about connecting to the student body and serving the community. They are already beginning the selection process for next year’s Fall Charity.

The current executive board’s favorite memories from SGA involve organizing events in the fall and seeing the impact of their work. Mary Getty, outgoing President, says that "one of [her] favorite moments from SGA is the Canned Food Drive because all of the executive officers spend the whole day together working to box, sort, and count cans, and it is so fulfilling at the end".

Carter Brown, outgoing VP, enjoyed the grand reveal for fall charity donations to Equip and The Lovelady Center. He says, "That was a cool moment for me because we got to see how all of our work from first semester came together to support a local nonprofit". AJ Litty, outgoing Director of Student Involvement, also made priceless memories from the grand reveal. She says, “ I will never forget the faces of the members of the Lovelady Center when we revealed the total. It was a moment that I truly felt all of our hard work pay off".

Last year, SGA had the opportunity to tour the Lovelady Center and understand the impact their fundraisers make. Meredith Robinson, outgoing Administrative VP, says the tour was her favorite memory because “It was so cool to see where our fall charity money was going, and it was so fulfilling to meet some of the Lovelady Center women.” Revealing a 6-digit total sum is exciting, but meeting the people your work affects really hits different.

In addition to serving the local community, members of the SGA have found a community of their own.

According to AJ Litty, “Being on SGA Exec has been the biggest blessing to me this year. Having the opportunity to serve the school, classmates, and community alongside 9 of my best friends is something that I will truly cherish forever.”

Meredith Robinson agrees that the SGA has been a transformative experience: "I'm so blessed that I have had the opportunity to serve on SGA Exec for 2 years and would not trade these memories or friendships for the world!"

Personally, I did not envision myself running for SGA, let alone end up enjoying three years serving as a class representative. It gave me the opportunity to try something new and make friends I wouldn’t have met otherwise. I’m sure that SGA will continue to be a cornerstone of the community and I’m excited to see how it grows.
