On October 3rd, Vestavia Hills High School finished up another homecoming week filled with fun dress-up themes and entertaining events. On Friday, each grade has a different dress-up theme. Freshmen had a theme of Construction, and were seen wearing bright neon vests. Sophomores were pirates and dressed up with bandanas and gold jewelry. Juniors were hippies and wore colorful dresses, sunglasses, and peace signs. The band wore collared shirts and visors as they had a theme of preppy country club attire. And lastly, the seniors had their traditional theme of Disney, with the senior girls wearing their matching Dalmatian costumes from 101 Dalmatians, and many others wore animal onesies.

At the start of the pep rally, Just Singin’ graced our ears by singing the National Anthem. Shortly after, Harper Wolfe, the SGA Chaplain, gave a quick speech. Then, as everyone waited in anticipation, the homecoming king was announced! Will Davis, the senior homecoming nominee, was announced as the homecoming king! All five nominees heavily contributed to helping the Love Lady Center!

Following the announcement of the homecoming king, the SGA introduced a new game to the students: The Masked Dancer. Each grade selected a person to dress up in an inflated costume and would have a dance-off against the other grades. The winner would be selected and unmasked. After a few intense rounds of dancing and songs like Travis Scott's "FE!N," the junior representative, dressed in a squirrel costume, was deemed the winner. The juniors were ecstatic and cheering as it was revealed that the masked dancer was Colin Strevy.

Then, all the dance performances started coming. The Majorettes and Rockettes had beautifully choreographed dances and got the crowd excited. After the Majorettes' first performance, they used lit-up batons and turned off the lights for a cool glow-in-the-dark choreography. Lastly, the Color Guard team had an amazing performance, using two different Wicked-theme flags to showcase their routine.

However, the energy of the pep rally was soon overshadowed by an unexpected incident. During the Junior Varsity Basketball dance routine, an underclassman fell, injuring her arm. She was promptly assisted off the floor with emergency responders and first aid. Soon after, a few students in the stands were also seen feeling unwell and needed to be treated by medical personnel. The pep rally was halted as it was important to ensure the safety and well-being of the student population. This homecoming pep rally was a great example that risks can still happen in spirited and exciting events.

Dr. Inabinet encouraged students to keep their upbeat energy throughout the day and informed the VHHS community that the students were being well taken care of. The safety of students matters infinitely more than watching a few more dances, but incident aside, the pep rally was a fun and eventful day to wrap up homecoming week!
