At the end of this September, the VHHS math team took a trip to Colorado for a tournament at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). Apart from the actual competition, math teamers were able to explore both Colorado’s rocky, mountainous landscape as well as the town Manitou Springs.

On the first day, the team traveled to the Royal Gorge, where they rode the Royal Gorge Aerial Gondola. The aerial gondola featured a clear, glass floor, allowing riders to see the view below as they ride 2,200 feet across the Gorge and 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River. Although a zipline was usually offered at the Royal Gorge, it was unavailable due to cloudy and foggy weather.

On the second day, math teamers rode the Pikes Peak Cog Railway—The Broadmoor Manitou,—up to Pikes Peak, but were unable to ride to the top due to blizzarding.

After Pikes Peak, they traveled to Manitou Springs to shop at the local stores and market. Some math team members attested to the town having some great burgers. Afterwards, they took a brief visit to Garden of Gods, a national natural landmark.

The third day was the competition for math teamers and took place at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The second prize was won by Joseph Lin, an 8th grader at Pizitz Middle School by a three way tie. 22 math teamers received honorable mentions from the tournament, making the team's endeavor a success!

On this trip, math teamers didn’t just win awards; they were also able to explore some of the numerous beautiful places that Colorado offers. The members learned more about each other over the course of the trip (including which members were light sleepers). Overall, the trip was popular among members and a great chance to have some fun outdoors.
