Toga Day!

Happy Toga Day! On October 8th, right before Fall Break, the senior class had their annual tradition of wearing togas for the pep rally against Hoover. Usually, the dress-up day, pep rally, and football game would all take place on a Friday, but because of the altered schedule for Fall Break, there were some changes: the dress-up and pep rally day took place on Thursday, while the football game occurred on Friday. Unfortunately, the schedule change prevented a lot of people from attending the game as they were already on vacation for the break.
For the senior tradition, girls will usually wear bright, colorful togas along with gold accessories like arm cuffs and golden laurel headbands. The majority of girls wore pastel colors such as pink, blue, purple, and green, and had a yellow tassel wrapped around their waist. Girls had to buy silk from Hobby Lobby or Amazon, around 3-4 yards, and tied it themselves using safety pins and sometimes fashion tape. For guys, it was much simpler: their togas were simply white bedsheets that were tied similarly at the shoulder. Some guys wore accessories like a trojan helmet and brought plastic shields or swords.
Every year, toga day falls on the football game against Hoover (Beat the Bucs!), as Hoover is arguably one of our biggest competitions. Last year was the first time in several years that Vestavia beat Hoover with a score of 39-30. This year everyone was looking forward to seeing if we could keep up the winning streak. On Friday, October 9th, despite the non-stop rain and threats of Hurricane Isaias, the Vestavia’s football team and student’s section rallied. With the game time moved up an hour, with kick-off starting at 6 pm instead of 7, everyone was so excited. In the end, Vestavia was able to win 6-3! The students celebrated again by rushing the football field and cheering together. Go Rebels!
Toga Day is a day that so many seniors look forward to. It is one of the most anticipated dress-up days, next to Nerd Day and Disney, in which the senior girls dress up as Dalmatians from 101 Dalmatians. During this day, everyone took photos on the senior patio and screamed their hearts out at both the pep rally and football game. Toga Day this year certainly did not disappoint!
