Most clubs give students a chance to explore academics, hobbies, or leadership. But how many provide the opportunity to serve the community while also building lifelong skills?

Andera Ye, president of Vestavia Hills High School’s Red Cross Club, describes the group as “creative, enthusiastic, and passionate.” She wanted to bring that experience to Vestavia, creating a space where students could make a real difference. Within just a few months, the club has already earned recognition, placing second in the homecoming poster competition.

For Andera, the idea came from noticing a gap in service opportunities. During her sophomore year, she was in a club where they promised many opportunities to serve our community; however, that was never fulfilled. So she thought, why not create her ideal club? The process of starting from scratch wasn’t easy, but she says it was worth it because of the excitement and dedication of the members.

The Red Cross Club isn’t just about volunteering—it’s about connection. One of the events Andera is most excited about this semester is the Red Cross Student Volunteer Collaboration Night, which will bring VHHS members together with students from across Alabama. The event is designed to foster a sense of community among students who are equally passionate about service and health, giving them the chance to share ideas and work toward common goals.

Members also gain valuable skills along the way. From teamwork and leadership to communication and creativity, the club provides opportunities for students to grow beyond the classroom. For example, the homecoming poster became a chance for an art lead team to step up and guide others. “They are so talented and creative,” Andera said, proud of the way students supported each other and found their strengths.

Looking ahead, the Red Cross Club hopes to continue expanding by inviting guest speakers, collaborating with local organizations, and creating new opportunities for service.

The impact of the Red Cross Club is already being felt, but its future potential is even brighter. For students who are eager to get involved and give back, Andera has a clear message: If you’re passionate about serving your community, the VHHS Red Cross Club is the perfect place for you.
