This Wednesday, September 30th, girls came down to the football field wearing their grade colors: freshmen were yellow, sophomores were purple, juniors were teal, and seniors were hot pink.  All the girls came together and cheered and took many pictures as their classmates participated in a traditional Powderpuff game against other grade levels.

Powderpuff has been a tradition at Vestavia Hills High School for a very long time, but it has actually been around since World War 2. Powderpuff was actually created because during World War 2, lots of men were off fighting in the war, so the girls played football instead of them to try and lift some school spirit and morale in a dark time. The name of this football game actually became known as Powderpuff because during halftime the players would reapply their makeup using powder puffs.

In the Powderpuff game, the traditional gender roles of football games are switched, so girls become the football players, while boys cheer on the sidelines and coach the game. Girls play with flags, however, instead of tackling each other. This year, the Senior class won after playing some great games.

The special part of Powderpuff at Vestavia is that the money that is raised through the shirts, food, and donations is always given to a good cause. This year, that cause is the Prescott House, where children from bad situations are rehabilitated and given the proper home and care that they need.

Powderpuff is truly a special activity that brings everyone together, and the Vestavia Hills spirit is definitely keeping it alive and thriving. It is a great experience for everyone, and it is the perfect way of keeping old traditions alive.
