On Thursday, October 3rd, many Vestavia students participated in powderpuff, an annual flag football game during Vestavia Hills High School’s homecoming week to raise money for their fall charity, The Lovelady Center. The Lovelady Center is a Christ-centered organization that assists women through their recovery journey. The center cares for many of the women’s children as well. The funds donated to the center will be used to create a new cosmetology school for the residents in the facility, giving them a sense of purpose and opportunity to have a successful career in the real world.

Many of the homecoming week festivities running from Monday, September 29th, to the homecoming dance on October 4th contributed to the final funds raised for the charity, such as the Student-Faculty Basketball Game during the school day of Wednesday, October 1st, where the students won for the first time in over a decade. Also, a portion of the ticket sales for the homecoming dance on October 4th went towards the fundraiser.

Additionally, a portion of the powderpuff sign-up fee contributed to the final donation to The Lovelady Center. Upon signing up, female students received t-shirts color-coordinated by grade and an opportunity to be a player in the game, while male students could volunteer to coach the female teams or be a part of the pep squad.

At 5:30 pm on the night of Powderpuff, Vestavia’s Student Government Association booked Doodles to come to the event to sell sorbet and Italian ice until 8:30 pm. A portion of the proceeds from the Doodle’s sales also went towards The Lovelady Center.  Many players arrived at the event at 5:30 pm for warmups. Upon arrival, players were given the opportunity to donate money at the stadium entrance. The first game began at 6:00 pm. The seniors in their hot pink shirts faced the freshmen in yellow and dominated the game in a shutout. Shortly after, the juniors in green beat the sophomores in purple in the second game. A representative from The Lovelady Center gave a grateful and heartfelt speech before the final game, seniors versus juniors. In the finals, the seniors ultimately had the victory over the juniors.

Overall, powderpuff is not just a competitive flag football game; it is an opportunity for students to contribute to the people and organizations in their community as well as bond with their peers.
