Spring Break

Spring Break, a week when students get off from school to go on vacations with family, spend time with friends, sleep in, and sometimes visit colleges. Hopefully, with the stress of homework assignments, tests, and quizzes off of their back. With sunny days and shorter hours, it is a time for students and teachers alike to have a little break in the second semester filled with chaos. While many people — students and teachers alike — go on vacations to cities, beaches, and the mountain sides, that leaves some people to have vacations at home. Spending their breaks with a staycation in the house can be boring and sometimes dull. But luckily, Birmingham has a lot to offer for entertainment for everyone.

Outdoor Activities:

There are multiple state parks and mountain ranges for people to climb in the Birmingham area. A hike at Ruffner Mountain to enjoy the beauty that Birmingham has to offer and enjoy the weather. Or Red Mountain Park with its historical mining trails and zip line. You can also bike or even hike at Oak Mountain State Park with little to no cost.

Food Tour:

If hiking and exercising isn’t your thing, there are plenty of restaurants for you to go to as well. Local favorites like Saw’s BBQ, Brusters, Big Spoon Creamery, or even Lags Eatery are just a few of the many restaurants that our city has to offer. There are also countless coffee shops like Coffee Co., Red Cat Coffee House, Cala Coffee, and O’Henry’s for those who want an iced coffee amidst the relentless heat and humidity.

The Arts:

The arts are also a key part of Birmingham’s culture. With multiple experiences for people to try at little to no cost, there’s something for everyone. The Birmingham Museum of Art offers free admission with exhibits that change multiple times a year. The Alabama Theater also shows concerts or even classic movies throughout the year. If you enjoy the historical side of the arts as well, you can go on a self-guided civil rights tour and visit the 16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, and the Civil Rights Institute.

Spring break is overall a time for people to relax and spend time with themselves and their loved ones. If it’s going on a vacation with your family, visiting colleges with your friends, or spending all day on TikTok in bed — enjoy the little break. Use the break to relax and mentally recharge in time for school and, eventually, exam seasons. Happy Spring Break!
