On October 1, 2025, the competition gym at Vestavia Hills High School was packed with eager students, ready to watch the annual Vestavia Hills Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game. The event was a part of a semester-long fundraising effort for The Lovelady Center. Students paid just five dollars for half an hour of entertainment while supporting a positive and impactful cause.
As the players were announced, the tone of the game became clear as the teachers walked on the court and were met with a chorus of booing from the student section while the seniors entered to thunderous cheers. As the game began, the students scored first with a breathtaking three-pointer, and the crowd went wild. The normally reserved teachers locked in, showing an unseen side of themselves as they began playing tough defense and running fast. As the first quarter came to a close, the students came out with a slight lead of 8-7. The second quarter began with another impressive three-pointer from the students and a foul from the faculty. The faculty responded with a two-pointer from the faculty, earning polite claps from their meager audience of fellow teachers. But their happiness was short-lived, as much to their dismay, the teachers had earned another foul. With 30 seconds on the clock, the music had turned on, and tensions were rising as the score sat at 14-12 with the students in the lead. A last-second shot narrowly missed the buzzer, and the crowd was on the edge of their seats as the game went into halftime.
The second half of the game was full of unexpected highlights and started with a surprising three-pointer from a faculty member, but the students quickly responded with one of their own. Soon after, the senior girls were subbed in, and despite not scoring, their team spirit greatly outdid that of the student players before them. As the third quarter came to an end, the score remained tied at 28-28. The fourth quarter began with the score pulling off from the teachers as they scored some easy two-pointers and some foul shots. As the clock ticked down, the students regained a tie until the one-minute mark, where the students rallied in the final minute, sinking a three-pointer that solidified their win. With this final score, the students broke a decade-long winning streak for the teachers, and the students celebrated their hard-earned victory.
