2022 Homecoming Floats

The homecoming floats have been a tradition at Vestavia Hills High school for years. Each year every grade is given a theme that is picked by the director of spirit or the director of homecoming. Each grade must create a float with a certain percentage of tissue paper without any adult help. The floats as well must represent our opposing team for the homecoming game and have no representation of any graduating class. After the floats are completed anonymous judges will go and vote on which float is the winning float. In 2021 the winning class was the class of 2024 with the theme of Christmas led by the director of homecoming, Libby Woodham. This year though will be a hard decision to make.

I’ll start off with the class of 2026. The freshman's theme this year was chill out the hornets. The freshman director of homecoming Holland created an iced out float! After interviewing her she told me a few things about the float! It took the freshman class around 3 weeks to finish the float, and they had an average of 5-8 people work on it. The float had an Elsa and Olaf cardboard cutout from the movie Frozen. On the ground is a mirror to represent ice and beside it is a cooler and an ice cube. In the ice cube is a Chelsea helmet and in the cooler is the Chelsea Hornet. The float turned out incredibly cool! Amazing job freshman!

Next is the class of 2025. The sophomores theme was clown on chelsea. The float centered on a circus/carnival theme. The director of spirit Blakely Ferguson and director of homecoming Kate Hurst is responsible for this amazing creation! The float took around 3 weeks to build and around 5 people came to work on it! On the sophomore float they had many representations of symbolism. For one, the ringmaster symbolized our football coach, Coach Evans, and the clown represents the Chelsea quarterback. My favorite part of the float is gonna have to be the tiger wearing the rebel jersey! I truly loved the creativity of this float!

Then we have the class of 2024. The juniors theme was haunt the hornets. The float revolved around a haunted graveyard. This float is truly astonishing. The float took around a month to create with around 10-15 people helping. On the float you see tombstones with each team the rebels have played and won, with the score. Next to the tombstones is a grim reaper with the starting quarterback, John Paul Heads picture placed in it. The grim reaper is holding a bug spray can representing how the rebels are gonna beat Chelsea. My favorite part of the entire float is the fog machines, it makes the float so cool and spooky looking. This entire float was designed and created by the director of spirit, Campbell Price. This float is truly incredible.

Lastly, we have the graduating class. The seniors theme was hollywood the hornets. Andrew Szymela was in charge and after interviewing him I found out about their process of building this float. This float took a total of 3 different builds so it took around 6 hours to finish. The background of the float is supposed to represent a sunset with the Rebelwood sign in front. My favorite part is the stars on the ground that have different teachers names! The overall process was very easy according to Andrew.

At 6:50pm on September 30, the school announced the winner of the homecoming float! The runner up was the freshman class! The winner though of the float competition was the junior class with their haunt the hornets float! The junior class has won the float competition 2 years and a row and is now hoping for 3 years next year!
