A Fun Switch

Last year, the class of 2028’s APUSH students had an abrupt change of teachers (who typically teach a two-year-long course). Although the students miss their sophomore teacher, the teacher switch-up has also encouraged students to get closer to their new teacher, who has definitely done a fantastic job with the move-in.
Mrs. Lewis has already made great connections with students in the first quarter, as Audrey Kim explains that, “It’s super easy to talk to Mrs. Lewis, even early in the mornings. She’s always laughing, and it makes the early class more fun.” Mrs. Lewis also includes fun games, like Taboo, to make her class more interactive, which is definitely something that many AP students like. Even though it's a difficult course with heavy content, Mrs. Lewis has definitely made the subject more enjoyable!
Additionally, Mrs. Lewis is loving the change, too. She appreciated the people she met during her interview, who presented Vestavia as “a place that valued the best in education and professionalism.” She is also impressed by Vestavia’s commitment to charity. She notes that the student body “incorporates their charitable campaigns into the pep rally spirit” and has “so much involvement in things like Youth Leadership and the RISE effort,” both of which are key to the Vestavia culture. It’s wonderful that Mrs. Lewis recognizes a core goal of Vestavia, and great encouragement to continue our strong efforts to serve those around us.
Finally, APUSH typically gets more challenging in the second year of the two-year course as students prepare for the AP test, but Mrs. Lewis has already begun teaching new skills to help students prepare. Aiden Billano’s favorite addition has been the “President’s Facts,” where students memorize presidents and some notable events during their presidencies. Although difficult, Aiden says, “It helps me understand the timeline of US history better.”
Students have enjoyed the first quarter with their new teacher, through both classwork activities and friendly conversations. Mrs. Lewis has also settled into the new environment, cherishing both strong student engagement and a professional workforce. Overall, Vestavia loves to see their community grow, and Mrs. Lewis fits right in!
