VHHS Wins Big at the Spain Park Robotics Tournament!

On Saturday, October 24th, the VHHS Robotics Team competed at their first local tournament at Spain Park! From 7:30 AM open doors to the awards past 5 PM, our five teams had a long, full day of competition to show off the hard work they’ve put in so far.

Though the tournament was local, many competitive teams arrived on scene, creating great matches to both compete in and spectate. Moreover, this tournament being early on in the season meant that many competitors especially used the opportunity to gain more experience on this year’s game, Override. In short, this year’s game involves placing pins into cups strategically based on color and flipping “toggles” attached to the walls to alter which team the points go to based on pins placed in corresponding quadrants. Due to the toggles, this year’s game has even more potential for quick outcome flips and large point swings.

When not competing in matches, teams squeezed in their judge interviews (an important component for awards determination), skills matches (where robots perform on a field without alliance or opponent interference), practice field time, and even mid-tournament tweaks.

After the standard six qualification matches, all five Vestavia teams moved onto the elimination matches. Two teams made it to the semifinals, and team 99040B Blackout Robotics triple-crowned as tournament champions, skills champion, and the Excellence Award receiver!
While our teams performed extremely well, this is only the start of the rest of an incredible season. For the rest of the season, our teams will continue to work to qualify for state and, potentially, Worlds! Coming up next is the Oxford Tournament in November, the Cleveland Tournament in December, and the Sunshine Showdown Signature Event in Orlando right after Christmas.
Stay tuned to hear more about our robotics team! Go Rebels!
