Culture Club Highlight: Learning about the World

ree

Do you want to travel across the whole world? Have you ever wondered what’s happening on the other side of the world? Did you know there are more than 7000 languages in the world?

If you’re curious about the world and want to learn more, Culture Club is for you! Culture Club aims to explore and celebrate cultures from across the globe. To broaden horizons and encourage diversity, Culture Club also provides an inclusive environment and opportunities for students to share their own stories and experiences.

Culture Club is exploring the world in many ways. Guest speakers around the world have shared their stories. Ayden Yother, a Vestavia student who’s studying abroad in Germany, talked to the club about her experiences as an exchange student (fun fact: Germany has VERY different windows). Culture Club has also invited Ece Gökçek to share about Turkish culture (another fun fact: the Turkish LOVE their tea). Ece is a teen fashion designer, and her brand Yingyoung even appeared in Turkish Vogue! And as the school year continues, there will be more opportunities to learn from guests all across the globe. Through these learning experiences, members view things from different perspectives which in turn leads to greater appreciation for diversity and more understanding in general.

In addition to listening and learning from voices across the world, Culture Club is also highlighting Vestavia students and their cultures. Members can present their cultures and tell their stories. They also have opportunities to try different cuisines while listening to their peers, and enjoying delicious Pfeffernüsse cookies, Zubias, and more dishes from different countries. Culture Club has also come together to celebrate holidays from other nations, like Germany’s Oktoberfest.

Although the Culture Club is new to the main campus this year, the club made an impact at the Freshman campus last year. Culture Club has also helped our community. By hosting numerous bake sales (yum! Who doesn’t love cookies?), the club raised hundreds of dollars and donated all proceeds to charities chosen by the club members. In its first year, the club fundraised around $1000, and they have donated it to Children’s Hospital and Cystic-fibrosis research. This year, Culture Club has grown and the club will continue to donate and help out in the community. Be on the lookout for bake sales as the year goes on!

As the Culture Club grows at the main campus, the club aims to accomplish more and leave a bigger impact on the Rebel community!
