Letter From The Editor 11/14

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

I don’t know many people who can truly say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday. It has the unfortunate placement of following up the fun of Halloween and being overshadowed by the joy of the holidays, quietly falling in the dead space between October and December.

When I was a kid, Thanksgiving really only meant that it was time to paint turkeys in my first grade class, or spend a week at my grandparents’ house. It might have taken a few years, but I think we have all learned that Thanksgiving is about more than pumpkin pie and running the Turkey Trot.

These past few weeks have been all about giving thanks. The canned food drive is such a staple part of Fall at Vestavia, and truly ensures weeks of all-in community involvement. While the SGA set an ambitious goal of 20,000 cans, We surpassed our goal by over 4,000 cans, and brought in over 10,000 on the last day.

Things like the canned food drive exemplify the power of what we can do when we work together. Everyone who brought in just one can is responsible for a part of the grand total at the end, and more importantly, someone’s Thanksgiving dinner.

So while Magic 96.5 may have already started playing Jingle Bells, don’t forget to give thanks over Thanksgiving break. Be thankful for not only your family, but your friends, and your community, whatever that may look like.

This drop is all about gratitude. Whether it be delicious Thanksgiving recipes, or a win at Mock Trial, we all have something to be thankful for.

Happy Reading!
