Hey everyone,
I hope everyone had a great weekend, and is looking forward to a great week. This past week, many people around the world celebrated Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is celebrated in a multitude of different ways. In New Orleans, students get time off of school to attend the festivities happening around town. In Mobile, citizens celebrate in the birthplace of Mardi Gras with elaborate parades and festivals. On a more relaxed note, many families stick with picking up a king cake from the grocery store to celebrate the holiday in a more low-key way.
However, in these places that are extremely committed to the holiday, groups spend an immense amount of time preparing for the two-week celebration. It is said that in cities like Mobile and New Orleans, City Planners and Mardi Gras coordinators begin planning the next year’s slate of events the day after Mardi Gras is over. While I have never experienced a Mardi Gras parade in one of those places, I think we can all relate to having something that we spend a lot of time anticipating.
Just this past month, Vestavia students presented the Thespian Festival, hosted the Mockingbird Debate Tournament, won the State championship for wrestling, participated in the Alabama state basketball play-offs, competed at the Robotics State Tournament, attended the Alabama French Convention and Alabama Latin Festival, and attended the Alabama Youth Legislature Conference. Needless to say, there’s a lot to celebrate.
Although it is easy to focus on the results of events like these, the practice, planning, and coordination it takes to attend these events in the first place should be applauded, no matter the outcome.
This drop recognizes a few of these events, and shines a light on the students who took the time to attend these annual endeavors.
Happy Reading,
