This year’s Powderpuff game served not only as a fun community night out for Vestavia Hills High School students, but also as a fundraiser for the VHHS fall charity Libby’s Friends! Libby’s Friends is an organization assisting families of children with special needs in the financial aspect of care, ensuring the best quality of life for their children, without financial stress. Proceeds from Powderpuff, along with other fundraising events, go directly to Libby’s Friends!

Powderpuff is comprised of three games, the first between Freshmen and Seniors, the Second between Sophomores and Juniors, and the third between the two winners of the previous games.

In the first game, the notorious Freshmen/Senior matchup, the Seniors gained an early lead, gaining 18 points by the start of halftime. This lead continued, with the Seniors winning their first game 26-7, placing the class of 2024 on top once again!

Moving into the Sophomore/Junior game, the Junior coaches were eager to send their team onto the field, and optimistically reported that the “Juniors are coming out here to win!” The Sophomores however, showed equal earnestness, scoring within the first quarter. While the Juniors moved slow and steady down the field, the Sophomores wouldn’t give up that easily, gaining three interceptions over the course of the game! The Sophomores went on to continue their early lead, with a first win of 20-0!

During a brief halftime between games, the crowd had the honor of hearing from a family helped by Libby’s Friends in our own community! This wonderful speech served as a great reminder for how important this fundraiser is, and what a great impact it makes!

The final game of the night was played by the Sophomores and the Seniors, a tight matchup leaving each grade elated for a potential victory! Despite an incredible effort, the Seniors triumphed, crowning the class of 2024, our annual Vestavia Hills High School Powderpuff champions!

Our excellent volunteers from SGA helped with commentating, scorekeeping, and working the chains and end-zones. We also had wonderful workers at an outside Doodles Truck, supporting Libby’s Friends!

When asked about their favorite part of Powderpuff, one player responded:

“My favorite part of Powderpuff is definitely the coaches hyping the players up!”

Our amazing coaches numbered around five from each grade, including members of our Homecoming Court, each creating plays and energizing their teams.

Another student noted that they “love the beautiful weather and hanging out with [their] friends.”

The students, players, and coaches alike, were also very excited to support a common goal, with one player describing that they were “so happy to have everyone coming together and having fun for a great cause!”

This year’s Powderpuff was once again an amazing experience for everyone involved, and a great addition to Vestavia Hills High School’s quest to support Libby’s Friends throughout this fall! The annual VHHS Powderpuff game will continue on as an amazing opportunity for friendship, fun, community connection, and school spirit!
